IATA: Battery powered wheelchair and mobility aid guidance document

Based on 2019 regulations, IATA has released the safety requirements applicable to the carriage of battery-powered wheelchairs and mobility aids when carried by passengers travelling by air.

The batteries that power wheelchairs and mobility aids are considered dangerous goods when carried by air. These and some other dangerous goods that are permitted for carriage by passengers can be transported safely by air provided certain safety requirements are met.

The requirements are detailed in the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, which are based on the ICAO Technical Instructions.

Coming into effect on 1 January 2019, it includes critical information for agents booking for clients who make use of mobility aids and for their clients when they travel.
